Hendrick Avercamp: The Little Ice Age

Saturday, November 21st 2009

21 November 2009 - 15 February 2010. Hendrick Avercamp (1585-1634) was a 17th century Dutch artist famous for his landscapes. As the title of this exhibition suggests, the artist specialised in depicting closely-observed snowy scenes such as ice-skating couples, children throwing snowballs, even a gentleman falling through the ice. This is the first time the Rijksmuseum has hosted such a comprehensive exhibition devoted entirely to the work of Avercamp. Many of the paintings are on loan from Norway's Billedgaleri, Boston's Museum of Fine Arts and galleries in London. Daily 09.00-18.00, Friday 09.00-20.30 more

Alfred Stevens

Friday, September 18th 2009

18 September 2009 - 24 January 2010. For the first time in 30 years, the Van Gogh Museum is hosting a retrospective of Belgian artist Alfred Stevens. The exhibition, which features 64 paintings, has been organised in collaboration with the Royal Museums of Fine Art in Belgium. Alfred Stevens (1823-1906) was one of the most well-known artists in Paris during the flourishing art scene of the latter half of the 19th century. He came to prominence at the 1855 Paris World Fair with a painting of a homeless family in the snow. Although he began his career as a painter of historical scenes, it was his alluring images of women that later caused something of a stir. Along with James McNeill Whistler, he was one of the first Western artists at the time to become heavily influenced by Japanese art. Daily: 10.00-18.00 Fri: 10.00-22.00 more

Cézanne - Picasso - Mondrian

Saturday, October 17th 2009

17 October 2009 - 24 January 2010. This is the latest major exhibition to be staged in the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag. Tracing the work of three revolutionary artists, it follows the influence of Cézanne on Picasso, and how Picasso in turn influenced Mondrian. All three artists were leading exponents of their own artistic movements, namely Impressionism, Cubism and De Stijl. Each discipline spectacularly changed the artworld and, through the organic and age-old process of progression and experimentation, spawned countless other abstract movements. This show includes world-famous paintings on loan from museums in Washington, New York and Paris. Tues-Sun: 11.00-17.00 more
